GLA:D
Hip & Knee Osteoarthritis Education & Exercise
Program

GLA:D® or Good Life with Arthritis: Denmark, is an education and exercise program developed by researchers in Denmark for people with Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis (OA). It is based on the latest evidence in Osteoarthritis management and is considered one of the best first treatments for Hip and Knee arthritis.

The GLAD program consists of

  • 2 education classes which teach participants about hip and knee Osteoarthritis and how to self-manage their condition

  • Physio led Group strength and Neuromuscular training sessions (twice per week for 6 weeks) which have been shown to reduce Hip and Knee osteoarthritis symptoms and improve quality of Life. Group sizes are limited to  5 participants and classes run for 60 minutes. Participants are required to be assessed by a physiotherapist before being able to join the program. GLA:D BACK
Research Study Australia 2020

Physiotherapists Joe Arico and Louise Treston, are part of a small group of clinicians, invited to run the GLA:D BACK Pilot program in Australia as part of a Research study conducted by Macquarie University NSW.

The GLA:D BACK program implements the latest international evidenced based guidelines for the management of persistent or recurrent low back pain through standardized patient education and exercise. It was developed by researchers at the same university in Denmark who developed the very well received GLA:D (Good Life with Osteo-Arthritis in Denmark) program for Hip and Knee OA.

Unlike many other existing exercise programs for back pain, the GLA:D Back program is based on a behavior-oriented model (given that with persistent low back pain, behavior can often maintain pain and ideas about what is wrong and what you can and can’t do may be as disabling as pain itself) It also focuses more on functional strengthening exercises and movement patterns which reflect everyday activities.

The GLA:D BACK program consists of

  • Two education sessions which teach patients about low back pain how to self-manage their condition

  • Physio Group training sessions twice a week for eight weeks which help to improve mobility, strength and muscle control of the spine
